With the upcoming release of Tangled, Disney will celebrate its 50th in-house animated feature, the culmination of 70 years of almost non-stop production. It’s easy to be cynical about certain periods in Disney’s history – the lean years of the 1980s, which were documented in the excellent Waking Sleeping Beauty, certainly don’t inspire much fondness among animation fans. But it’s all part of a grand narrative, one which the BFI hopes to document with its upcoming year-long retrospective, The Disney 50. The retrospective promises to offer special events to complement the screenings, and if the Family Ticket deal (4 for £20) doesn’t attract parents and their brood to the South Bank in 2011, nothing will. The Disney 50 kicks off with Pinocchio on the 25th of January, and Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs on the 26th.
