Interesting news from Screen International, who have reported from the Berlinale that Werner Herzog is currently in Houston, Texas – filming death row inmates for a new documentary.
After negotiations with lawyers, wardens and the inmates themselves, Herzog has managed to secure interviews with five subjects, from which he hopes to make an as-yet untitled documentary. He comments, “Of course, it fascinates me to look into deep abysses of the human soul. Left and right, wherever you look, there is an abyss”.
After The Wild Blue Yonder and Encounters at the End of the World, it should be interesting to see Herzog turn his camera on a subject closer to home – and particularly such a politically charged one. Of course, it seems likely than the director won’t be so interested in taking a stance, but giving a voice to the prisoners concerned. Despite their firm friendship, Herzog isn’t Errol Morris.
